News Article- Ontario’s Pitbull Ban is Barking Up the Wrong Tree

In Toronto, Ontario, man’s best friend might be in jeopardy, as counsel decided to pass a bill that bans the ownership of pitbulls. Many pet owners are uproarious about the bill, taking to protests outside of the councel chambers, armed with words of animal rights and the company of their pooches. Those protesting believe that the counsel has tried and failed to come up with a solution to dog attacks; the means by which they’ve gone about positive change is negative, discriminatory, and against rights, both human and animal. “Man is at fault, not the dogs,” this message the main argument of the bill activists.

This was over a decade ago, and now the law is once again gaining attention, as Montreal has adopted the bill and the pitbull population in Ontario is almost gone. The Ministry of the Attourney General says that he has no intention of changing the law at this time, and that since the change have been in place, there are fewer attacks by the breed, but that’s the problem: any breed can bite or be a danger. Blame for dog related attacks fall onto humans, as they are the ones who have bred the dogs to have good traits for fighting and hunting, and also are responsible for the teaching of their canines.

A dog’s behaviour is reflective of that of the pet owner and those around them, as their values become instilled into their pets. Society seems to deem pitbulls and other dogs as not having animal instincts when they feel threatened or scared, reacting in the only way they know how. Dogs become a danger to the general public because they have been taught to be that way, by human influence and the environment they grew up in. Sound familiar? You’d expect the same behaviour in a young child, as it is often documented that people whom grow up in rough environment turn to crime.

To this day, there are still breeders and trainers who raise pitbulls to fight and kill other dogs; chances are, their owners are violent themselves. Violence literally breeding violence. When taken out of a lifestyle of constant fighting, where bloodshed is all that they have known, a dog knows no better. But let me ask you: why are murderers of human life sent to jail to live out a sentence of however many years, while a dog who bites someone put down? Most dog owners love and treat their canine companions as family and the feeling end up being returned by the dog. This means that they will fight to protect their loved ones, as any family member should. With this law, there is a loop hole, where someone can shoot your dog, for the sole reason of it being a pitbull; an undesired breed. If it were any other dog, that had not gotten such a bad reputation through the greed of humans, would it be ethical to just shoot them? This discriminatory persecution towards pitbulls would not fly well if it were against humans, so where is the humanity in this situation? Is it the ego of man, obscuring their ethics, or were there none to really begin with? Teaching Fido to beg, shouldn’t be for his life.
